"Under the bludgeonings of chance;
My head is bloody, but unbowed"
- Invictus
Invictus
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds, and shall find, me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll. I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul -William Ernest Henley |
Summary of Invictus (Movie):
After 27 years of imprisonment, Nelson Mandela is finally freed in 1990. Four years after his release Mandel is elected as president of South Africa. As president of South Africa, Mandela notices that the country is segregated politcally, economically, and socially. Mandela realizes that something must change in order for the nation to progress. He teams up with the Springbok's rugby team captain to unite the country as a whole. The world cup for rugby was going to be held in South Africa that year and Mandela knew that this was his one chance of making a change in his country. Although the Springbok's were considered to be the rugby team for the white part of South Africa, Mandela attempts to make the Springbok's the rugby team for entire nation. Mandela uses the captain Francis Pienaar to inspire others by inspiring Pienaar himself.
